The Kirura Factory was created in 1988, established for local coffee farmers to allow adequate processing and milling for their coffees. Ideal conditions for coffee growing lend itself beautifully here, red and mineral rich soils coupled with with cooler nights and warmer days, allow slow and steady maturation for coffee to blossom and fruit. The River Gatamaiyu is particularly important in the region as it provides the essential clean water for processing. Cherries are dried on raised beds outdoors to dry in the sun, often covered with a thin layer of cloth. Harvests in the country are available two times in year, in that of April and July and October to December.
