Nicaragua’s mountainous northwest is a quiet star of Central American coffee, and this is a lovely example of what it can do. It’s comforting, sweet and rounded, the sort of cup you’ll want a second of.

SHG stands for Strictly High Grown, meaning the coffee is grown high in the hills. The cooler air slows the cherries as they ripen, which gives a denser, better-developed bean.In the cup, rich cocoa comes first, followed by soft caramel sweetness and a toasty walnut finish. It’s smooth and satisfying, with nothing sharp or bitter, and it works well as an everyday coffee in a cafetière, a filter or a moka pot, or as a gentle espresso.

Espresso being poured from a machine into a glass cup.

Nicaragua - Central America

Coffee reached Nicaragua in the mid-1800s and became a major export within decades. Today it’s grown mainly in the cool northern highlands of Jinotega, Matagalpa and Nueva Segovia.

Nicaraguan coffees are known for their gentle sweetness and typically show notes of milk chocolate, caramel and toasted nuts. Smooth and easy-drinking.
