Location

Located on the lush, fertile slopes of Mount Meru, a short drive from the awe-inspiring Mount Kilimanjaro. Occupying an area of 342 hectares, Burka Estate is proud to produce several hundred tonnes of premium Arabica coffee each year.

As one of the largest and most established coffee estates in the region, they employ over 200 permanent staff and 300 task-specific workers.  At Burka, quality begins at the source. They operate two independent wet mills on-site, having full access and attention to every step of the coffee processing journey, from freshly picked cherry to export-ready green.

The local expert team includes an agronomist, quality control manager, financial controller, and general manager, all working closely with senior staff to ensure they are delivering consistently exceptional coffee, season after season.

History of the Farm

Burka Coffee Estate was established in 1899 by German settlers, with the first coffee planted in 1918. After World War I, the estate came under British control before being acquired by Swiss investors in 1929. In 1990, Burka expanded by acquiring the neighbouring Selian Coffee Estate, making way for larger growing areas.

Today, the estate manages 342 hectares of Arabica coffee, though its size has reduced as the city of Arusha has grown in population and local necessity. The name “Burka” comes from natural springs on the farm, which provides vital water for both irrigation and the local community.
